A Family Day Out in Hitchin: Vintage Markets, Antique Finds, and the Joy of Just Exploring

Sometimes the best sourcing trips are not sourcing trips at all. They are family days out that happen to wander through the most wonderful vintage markets, dusty emporiums, and charity shops you have ever set foot in. That is exactly what happened when we spent a day exploring Hitchin, and it is a day we will not forget in a hurry.

A Town Worth Exploring

Hitchin is one of those towns that rewards the curious. It has a charm and character that is increasingly rare, with independent shops lining its streets and a genuine sense of community around its markets and antique spaces. If you have never visited, put it on your list. It is the kind of place where you can spend a whole day and still feel like you have not seen everything.

The Finds

We were not shopping for our shop on this particular trip. Everything we found was for us, for our home, for our family. And there is something wonderfully freeing about that.

My husband, who has a very particular eye for a certain era of toys, came away absolutely delighted. He found one missing Transformer from his collection. After double-checking the price was right, he swiftly purchased it for display in his room. It was so adorable to see the joy on his face. There is something so powerful about the nostalgia of a childhood toy rediscovered.

My daughter Eloise, who has a deep love for gemstones and little treasures, found exactly the kind of trinkets that speak to her. Small, beautiful, and full of character. She has a gift for finding the things that other people walk past, and she did not disappoint.

And then there was my niece. She found a vintage guitar. A beautiful one. One that, when she picked it up and played a few chords, filled the whole room with the most wonderful sound. A vintage instrument that still sings is one of the most special finds imaginable. It was one of those moments that reminds you why vintage exists. These things were made to last, and to be loved again and again.

Our Favourite Places to Visit in Hitchin

If you are planning your own vintage day out in Hitchin, here are some of the places we love:

  • The Lifestyle Emporium and The Fleetville Emporium are wonderful places to lose an hour or two. Full of character, full of finds, and full of the kind of objects that have a story to tell.

  • The charity shops are absolutely worth a visit. Some of the best vintage finds in any town are hiding in plain sight on charity shop shelves, and Hitchin is no exception. Go slowly, look carefully, and you will be rewarded.

  • Vintage Bay is a brilliant stop if you are looking for a gift or something special. A thoughtfully curated space with pieces that feel chosen rather than just collected.

  • There are plenty more vintage and antique spaces to discover beyond these, and part of the joy is simply wandering and seeing what you find.

The Real Point of It All

What struck me most about that day was not any single find. It was the feeling of exploring somewhere together, of each person in our little group finding something that spoke specifically to them. My husband's Transformers, Eloise's trinkets, my niece's singing guitar. Each one a perfect reflection of the person who found it.

That is what vintage does. It does not just sell you an object. It finds you the right one.

If you ever find yourself in Hitchin, give yourself a full day. Wear comfortable shoes. Bring cash. And let yourself be surprised.

A note: none of the personal finds from this trip are for sale. They are ours to keep and love. But the spirit of the day very much lives on in everything we do at Bonita Eloise.
